Pink Lady Awards at the Mall Galleries

May, 2015 · By admin

The prestigious Mall Galleries (between Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace), London was the location for the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Awards in May 2015.  Over 7000 entries were submitted worldwide and 70 exhibited, including several of mine.

Open to professional and amateur photographers, the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Awards celebrate the very best in food photography and film from around the world.  The categories cover the full cultural range of the depiction of food in society and the finalists are invited to a champagne reception at the Mall Galleries which is followed by a five-day public exhibition.

My Commended Selection

An image I shot at Negumbo fish market, Sri Lanka which I visited for Sarojini Kamalanathan’s Sri Lanka Food was Highly Commended in the 2015 Pink Lady Food Photographer Awards, while two further images were Commended:

It was pretty good seeing one of my images displayed in such a prestigious location, particularly when I could view it with a glass of Taittinger in hand.

Pink Lady Awards Naming

In a nice piece of circumstance the awards, which were founded by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, are actually named after the Pink Lady apple.  The variety was created by an Englishman, John Cripps, who emigrated to Australia in the 1960’s. John developed the now famous Pink Lady variety at the WA Department of Agricuture by crossing a Lady Williams and a Golden Delicious. Pink Lady apples are now one of the most popular varieties in the world, and are generally grown in wine regions including Western Australia’s beautiful Southern Forests where I have been lucky enough to work.
